Very high banc

The term of very high banc (or THD) refers to capacities of access to Internet higher than that of the access by ADSL, that is to say a flow ranging between 25 and 200 Mbit/s. Previously reserved to the Backbone S and the infrastructures of the suppliers of access to Internet, very the high banc goes from now on to the end user, in particular through the FTTx

Technologies implemented

Several technologies of connection of the customers to the networks high-flow cohabit:

  • the cable, historically introduced in first by the suppliers of TV per cable, is especially present especially in the urban areas. The cable makes it possible to propose subscriptions up to 100 Mbit/s, performance seldom carried out in practice. The vectors of transmission classically used by the cable are coaxial cables.
  • the Fiberoptic, or FTTx, is the technique par excellence for the THD. Several technologies cohabit under this name - FTTN, FTTC, FTTB, FTTP, FTTH, FTTO, FTTLA,… - each one authorizing of the different flows.

To date, the fiberoptic at the subscriber is only technology guaranteeing truly very an high banc. Still intended for a number limited of hearths but more widespread to connect the large companies, the hospitals and the universities, the fiber takes its real rise in 2007 with the launching of the offers of the leading vendors of access. With this occasion, the optical network develops considerably in the big cities, stimulated by competition between operators.

With the international level, the massive deployment of the FTTH is already advanced in certain countries, in particular in Asia or in the United States. In Europe, the deployments start, in priority in the large urban poles.

Awaited benefit

From the point of view of the Town and country planning, the deployment of the THD should allow the maintenance, or the development, economic activities in the rural areas.

In addition to the development of the offer of existing communication - Triple-play (offers " packagée" including Internet, the Television, the Téléphone fixes), even quadruple-play, (Mobile phone moreover) - new services could also develop: Telecommuting, Video with the request,…
