Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescopes Array System

The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS, or System of very energy imagery of radiation per network of telescopes ) is a astronomical Observatoire on the ground, for the observation of the gamma rays. VERITAS consists of a network of 4 Télescope S of optical the reflectors type 12 meters in diameter. The detection of the gamma rays in the field of G eV in TeV is done by the detection of shower of particles caused by the entry of a gamma ray of high energy in the Terrestrial atmosphere. The gamma ray broken up into several types of particles which emit light Cherenkov, because their speed higher than that of the light in the air . This observatory will supplement the observations of the future space mission Broad Gamma-ray Area Space Telescope (GLAST), designed to be launched from here the end of the year 2007. The principal astrophysics objects that VERITAS observes are the active cores of galaxy, the Pulsar S, the Gamma-ray burst S etc

Design

  • Opening of 12 m, or 39 feet.

  • Each telescope is composed of 350 mirroirs.
  • Camera of 499 Pixel S on each telescope.
  • Each telescope has a field of 3.5 degree.
  • the field of energy covered if locates between 50 GeV and 50 T eV
