Vertou

Vertou ( Vrezou in Gallo, Gwerzhav or Breton Gwerzhoù in modern) is a common French, located in the department of the Loire-Atlantique and the area Pays of the Loire. It belongs to the historical Brittany.

Its inhabitants is called the Vertaviens and Vertaviennes .

Vertou is a green commune and calme.
It is also a dynamic Ville with its 20.000 Vertaviens and its industrial park of the Vertonne with in particular of the companies like BN and Mainguy with the even international national fame.

Geography

Vertou is located at the south of the Nantes agglomeration . With horse between city and countryside, an important part of its territory is established on the Vignoble Sèvre and Maine. The commune is undulating and crossed by the Nantes Sèvre and the Vertonne.

It is next to the communes of Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire, Low-Goulaine, High-Goulaine, the Hedge-Fouassière, Saint-Hackney carriage-on-Maine, Castle-Thébaud, Sorinières, Rezé, Bignon and Nantes.

Vertou is with less than 50 kilometers of the beaches of Moutiers-in-Retz, Bernerie-in-Retz and Pornic.

Principal the district S of Vertou is the Borough or Center-ville, Beautour, the Oak, Pégers-Reigniers, Planty, Grammoire, the Fish ponds, the Wicket, Rousselière and Grassinière.

History

In the Antiquity, the territory is populated by the Gallic people of the Ambilâtres, Gallic tribe living on southern bank of the the Loire, in particular in the city close to Razatum (Rezé) and belonged to the federation of the people Picton S.

Its name would have a Celtic origin. Indeed the first trace of Vertou is at the beginning of the Christian era with the Latin name of Vertou: Vertavum . Name which would be probably of origin Celtique (Gallic) with Ver meaning Rivière and taw that one could translate by calm, Paix.

Towards 575, Saint Martin founds in Vertou a community of monks in two Abbaye S.

Vis-a-vis the attacks and raids Vikings, the territory located on southern bank of the Loire, takes part in the defense of the Low-Poitou by organizing a collective defense under the authority of the County of Herbauges.

About the middle of IXe, after several victories of the Breton troops, ordered by Nominoé, over the Francs, part of the country of Herbauges is attached to the Brittany and constitutes a Walk in the South of Nantes.

About the year 1000 the monks of the Saint-Jouin Abbey of Marnes of the Poitou close to Thouars, rebuilt the abbey.

Between 1470 and 1650, the monks undertake great work, of which famous the " Fitted Monks " with an aim of regularizing the course of the Nantes Separates and of making it navigable.

The vineyard was increased at the request of François II, Duc of Brittany at the 15th century.

The borough of Vertou is almost entirely destroyed during the Revolution, during the confrontations between Blancs and Blue in 1793.

The May 31st 1865, its dismemberment gave rise to the commune of the Sorinières.

The first locks on Separates were built at the 17th century. Large the current lock, built by Pierre Desprez, accommodated its first boat on September 3rd, 1755. Vertou became an important river city thanks to the flourishing trade of the Vin on Separates Nantes, with many wine loadings between the Port-Domino and the Oak. In 1830, 1  639 boats crossed the Roadway, bearing 13  082 tons of goods… Maintaining the port activity disappeared but the wine activity exists still even if the urbanization always makes move back the vineyard.
