Versoix (river)

The Versoix is a river of the Canton of Geneva.

Course

Its layout is long approximately 22 kilometers. It takes its source on the slopes of the the Jura in French territory, in the Département of Ain where it is called Divonne . It passes by Divonne-the-Baths, or it forms the Lac of Divonne, skirts the free-Switzerland border on nearly 10.5 km, first of all with the Canton of Vaud then with the Canton of Geneva where it receives its main thing flowing Oudar on the territory of the commune of Collex-Bossy, then is thrown in the Lac Léman close to commune which bears its name, Versoix.

Affluents

The principal affluents of Versoix are Oudar and Munet (in France) and Nant of Bad cold-Heart, the Creuson, Nant of Rebatière and Nant of Fountain-of-Pissevache (in Switzerland)

History

The first use of Versoix by the man goes up with the Roman antiquity, when a Aqueduc is built there to transport collected water to the current site of the casino of Divonne, making it possible to feed Nyon out of drinking water. This conduit of 1,35 meter height on 1 meter of broad, still locatable nowadays on certain sections, is abandoned between 4th and the 5th century.

In 1278, only the Castle-extremely on the course of Versoix, the Château of Built-Beauregard is built by Pierre de Joinville on a hill overhanging the river. This castle is demolished by the Genevese in the night from January 11th to 12th 1590.

With the Middle Ages, several towers water is built along the course of the river which is also exploited by Moulin S. In 1392 (then again in 1448), the wood of Versoix are put at the Ban to avoid a fast deforestation, caused in particular by the industry of the Papier which flowers in the area.

This industry still progresses during the 16th century throughout Versoix, the last paper mill having closed its doors only in 2000. Into 1892, the Moulin of Richelien on the course of the river is transformed into hydroelectric Usine and provides in electricity a good part of the area.

During the Années 1990, Versoix knows several Crue S unusual which cause an acceleration of the erosion of the banks.
