A verse is small a Paragraphe which forms a division of a chapter in a Livre crowned, such as the Bible or the Coran.

In the Bible

The traditional versions of the Bible (David Martin, Ostervald, Segond, Darby, King James) comprise 31.102 verses: 23.145 in the Old Testament, 7.957 in the New one.

Their number varies according to the printed versions, because of the cutting of some Psaumes which include or not the dedications.

Cutting in verses is not origin, but the invention of the French printer Robert Estienne, at the time of his edition of the Bible of 1555.

In Coran

Contrary to the Bible, the division of Coran in chapters (Sourate S) and in verses (âya) is original.

The word used to name the Koranic verses is not only one typographical term or of page layout he affirms that each verse is a miraculous revelation.
