Its inhabitants is called the Versaillais .

Geography

Situation

The commune of Versailles is with nineteen kilometers in the south-west of Paris. Although it is the Chef-lieu, it is completely offset compared to the department of Yvelines, since it is in fact bordering on the department of the Hauts-de-Seine.

The communes bordering are Vaucresson, Marnes-the-Vain and City-with Avray in the North-East (all three communes of the Hauts-de-Seine), Viroflay in the east, Vélizy-Villacoublay and Jouy-in-Josas in south-east, Buc in the south, Guyancourt in south-west, Saint-Cyr-the School in the west, Bailly and Rocquencourt in the North-West and Chesnay in north.

Site

The communal territory is on a calcareous, marshy plate at the origin because of the cover of silt argillaceous, located between 100 and 150 meters of altitude, bordering in the south the valley relatively boxed of the Bièvre, surrounded by heights towards south-west and the North-East and being prolonged towards the west by the Plaine of Versailles.

This site does not have any important river, rare enough characteristic for a town of this importance. It is drained by two brooks, the Ru of Marivel, which runs towards the east and directly joined the the Seine with Sevres, and the Ru of Gally which joined towards the west the Mauldre with Beynes. These rivers were modified by the urbanization: the course of the Ru of Gally was amputee during the construction of the castle and of the digging of the Large Channel of which he is the natural emissary, the Ru of Marivel today became an entirely covered sewer.

Occupation of the territory

Although strongly urbanized, the communal territory of Versailles counts more than 50% of green areas or natural. In addition to the gardens located in the city, these spaces include/understand the park of the castle of Versailles which occupies the western part of the commune, the Forêt of Versailles in the southern part, relatively parcelled out, and a fringe of the Forêt of False-Re-fixing towards the limit is. The common one counts 350 hectares of forest on the whole

The urbanized part of Versailles includes/understands six principal districts:

  • the district of the Building sites, with the station of the same name.
  • the Saint-Louis district, near to the castle, which include/understand a historical zone, and where the cathedral Saint-Louis is, the Salle of the play to palm, the Potager of the king and the Pièce of water of Swiss the;
  • the Notre-Dame district, symmetrical of the Saint-Louis district compared to the axis of the castle, where one can see the church Notre-Dame and traverse the commercial street of the Parish.
  • districts of Montreuil, Porchefontaine and Clagny-Glatigny, primarily residential.
  • One of the historical quarters, connecting in full center town that of Notre-Dame and that of Saint-Louis and whose name disappeared today is the district Montbauron (energy of the Place of Weapons to the “Mount Bauron” and ranging between the avenue of Paris and that of Saint-Cloud)

It is necessary to quote moreover the districts of Jussieu Petits-Bois, Picardy and the district of Satory.

The residential area continues in north and the east towards the communes of Chesnay and of Viroflay, forming a continuous agglomeration, but is relatively isolated from the other communes, in particular by the park of the castle in the west, which is prolonged by the plain of Versailles, site classified and protected from the urbanization.

Pollution of the grounds

The commune includes/understands a site listed in the database of the ministry for ecology relating to the sites and grounds polluted (or potentially polluted) calling an action of the public authorities, with preventive measure or curative (BASOL). It is about the old factory with Gaz of Versailles, brought into service in 1875 and closed in 1954, whose site is partially since occupied by the installations of the Center of studies and formation of Gaz de France. The site, located in a residential area, was cleansed in 2003 at the time of the construction of an underground car park and is not any more the object of particular monitoring.

Transportation routes

The road service road is ensured since the origin by the road from Paris in Chartres, become the Trunk road 10, downgraded in secondary road 10 of Viroflay to Trappes. In Versailles, this road ends in the place of Weapons in front of the castle, under the name of avenue of Paris, and continuous towards the west with the southern edge of the park of Versailles passing between the castle and the Pièce of water of Swiss the. The accesses to the city are nowadays assured by a series ways to highway characteristics. It is:
  • in north the highway A13 (highway of Normandy) whose exchangers 5 and 6 give access to Versailles. It is prolonged by the highway A12 which circumvents the commune by the west.
  • in the south the Trunk road 286 which skirts the district of Satory and connects the highway A86, with the Colbert bridge, the Trunk road 12 with the Wood exchanger of Arcy,
  • in the east, the western section of a86 highway, in construction, in the form of a tunnel including/understanding two superimposed lanes, whose startup is envisaged in December 2009.

On the railway level, the commune is served by five Gare S of travellers (Versailles - Building sites, Versailles-Bank-Right-hand side, Versailles-Bank-Left, Montreuil and Porchefontaine). These stations ensure a very good service road with the capital giving access directly to various districts of Paris like to Defense. Most important is the station of the Building sites which is in the center of an important railway star. This one should be reinforced in the future with reopening with the traffic of the Ligne of Large Belt between Versailles and Saint-Germain-in-Bush hammer.

Heraldic

Etymology

The name of “Versailles” appears for the first time in a charter, the year 1038, abbey of the Holy Father of Chartres in which the name of a local lord is quoted, Hugo de Versaillis. The origin of this name is not known. The most probable assumption consists in attaching it to “versail”, which as old French indicated a cleared ground. This term probably comes from the Latin , versare , to pour, turn over. The term, the 11th century, would have indicated at the origin of the grounds Labor ées (turned over).

At the time of its creation at the 17th century, the new city, which corresponds to the current Notre-Dame district, was sometimes called “Villeneuve Saint-Louis” in homage to its creator, but it is finally the name of the castle, Versailles, which prevailed.

At the time of the Revolution, the commune had proposed with Convention to rename Versailles in “Cradle of Freedom” but had to retract in front of the reserves of most of the population.

Origins

The site of Versailles was probably not inhabited at the time prehistoric insofar as no archaeological vestige there were found, however as the grounds were strongly upset during the building work of the castle and of the installation of the park, certain traces could be destroyed. In the immediate surroundings, covered gone of the Neolithic time, pertaining to civilization “Seine-et-Marne” were found at the Pond-the-City and Marly-the-King.

At the time of Gallo-Roman, the site was on the layout of the way carrying out of Paris to Normandy via Villepreux and Neauphle-the-Castle.

The first attested mention of Versailles dates from the year 1038. A certain Hugues of Versailles Hugo de Versalliis is quoted in a charter of the Holy Father abbey of Chartres. It would be the first known lord of Versailles. The second allusion appears in 1065 in an act by which a certain Geoffroy de Gometz founded on this date the priory of Bazainville, not far from Houdan, that it gave to the abbey of Marmoutier Turns. To ensure of the regular and sufficient resources, it grants several grounds and privileges to him, with in particular “three Prébende S in Versailles from which one is in domino ”. Of these three emoluments canonic, one can put forth the assumption that in domino concerned the lord of Versailles, the two others of the tourangelle abbey. The village of Versailles would thus have been born about the middle from the eleventh century from a double initiative seigneuriale and nun.

In the Feudal system of medieval France , the lords of Versailles were subordinates directly to the king, without intermediate suzerain between them and the king. They were not then of a very important row. At the end of the 11th century, the first village had been established near a medieval manor and around the Saint-Julien church. The Saint-Julien parish of Versailles is quoted in a charter of 1084. Its agricultural activity and its position on the road of Paris to Dreux and the Normandy made a prosperous village of it, especially at the end of the 12th century known as the “century of holy Louis”, which was one boom in the north of France, marked by the construction of the Cathédrale S Gothic S. the 14th century brought the Black Death and the Guerre One hundred Year old, with their processions of died and destruction. At the end of the War One hundred Year old, at the 15th century, the village started to be rebuilt with a population of only 100 inhabitants. At that time two other villages existed in the territory of the current commune: Choisy-with-oxen and Trianon. They disappeared thereafter included in the park from the castle. The Choisy-with-Ox name recalls that this village was on the way by which the ox herds coming from Normandy were led to Paris.

At the 14th century, Gilles of Versailles exerts the load of Baillif of the king.

In 1561, Martial de Loménie, Secretary of State to finances of the king Charles IX, became only lord of Versailles. It obtained the authorization to establish four annual fairs and a weekly market Thursday. The population of Versailles reached 500 inhabitants then. Martial de Loménie was assassinated during the Massacre of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre (August 24th 1572) leaving only minors.

In 1575, Albert de Gondi, duke of Retz, originating in Florence arrived to France with Catherine de Médicis, bought the Seigneurie of Versailles. Consequently, Versailles was the property of Gondi, a family of rich and influential lawyers to the “Parlement” of Paris. The grandson of Albert, Henri de Gondi, which became cardinal, accepted on several occasions the king Henri IV in his manor of Versailles. In the years 1610, Gondi invited several times the young king Louis XIII with shooting parties in the vast forests of Versailles.

The time of the kings

In 1623, the king Louis XIII makes build an appointment of hunting on a ground of seven hundred and seventeen arpents (that is to say approximately 350 hectares) bought with various owners. It is in this first castle that was held the Day of Dupes the November 10th 1630.

April 8th, 1632, Louis XIII buys the totality of the seigniory of Versailles to his last lord, Jean-François de Gondi, archbishop of Paris. It is the decisive turn in the installation of the royalty in Versailles. In 1634, the work entrusted to the architect Philibert is completed Roy. The first manor is rebuilt and increased on the spot in the style “Louis XIII”. With died the king, in 1643, the village of Versailles had changed still little.

With the installation of the king Louis XIV and his court, the May 6th 1682, the small city will know a destiny blazing during the reign of this last with a population of approximately 30  000 inhabitants with his death and will continue to grow bigger under its successors until reaching 50  000 hearts when the Révolution arrives.

The XIXe century

January 3rd, 1805, the pope Black and white VII, come in Paris to crown Napoleon, is invited in Versailles. It was accepted by the first bishop of Versailles, Mgr To cart Rock, with the cathedral Saint-Louis then blesses the crowd gathered in front of the castle.

The importance of this big city consequently will decline, whereas it is given up by the capacity. This decline will cease after 1871, following the insurrection of the Commune of Paris, date on which the government of Thiers settles in Versailles, situation which will perdurera until in 1879.

The city is occupied by the Prussian troops starting from September 19th, 1870, while Paris is besieged. The occupation will last 174 days until March 12th, 1871. Versailles must face heavy requisitions. Being opposed to excessive requests, the mayor, Charles-Victor Chevrey-Branch, and three of his advisers are imprisoned on December 31st, 1870 and are released the next on January 6th after the tradesmen paid the ransom. The king of Prussia, Guillaume Ier settles in the castle of Versailles and is made proclaim emperor of Germany the January 18th 1871 in the Galerie of the Ices.

At the time of the Common , the government of Thiers flees the riot in Paris and settles in Versailles on March 18th, 1871, followed by a crowd of Parisian of which the number was estimated at more than 70.000 by the mayor whereas the city counted only 44.000 inhabitants with the census of 1866. A hemicycle is built in 1875 in the wing of the South of the castle to accommodate the House of Commons while the Senate sits at the Opera. The two rooms vote on June 19th, 1879 their transfer to Paris.

November 18th, 1777, is inaugurated, street of the Tanks, the theater of Versailles, one of oldest of France, on the initiative of Miss Montansier.

Consequently, Versailles will evolve/move like a provincial town with, however, all the ostentation of an important tourist city. She will know even a renewal of celebrity at the end of the First World War, during the signature of the various treaties.

The contemporary time

On February 17th and 19th 1986, the first top of the Francophonie was taken place in Versailles, in the castle, with in the chair François Mitterrand. It joined together, in addition to France, of the representative of 42 countries, including sixteen Heads of State and ten heads of government.

Today, with the growth of the suburbs of Paris, Versailles, which knew a strong economic and demographic expansion, is included in the Paris and its suburbs. The role of Versailles like administrative and legal center was reinforced in the years 1960 and 1970 and the city became the principal center of the western suburbs of Paris.

Town planning

The town of Versailles, born from the will of a king, is an artificial creation. There remains nothing the old village which was destroyed to allow the town-planning. Its plan is articulated around the place of Weapons, located in front of the castle, and from where radiate three broad avenues bordered of plane trees and laid out in range: the avenue of Paris in the center, in the axis of the castle, the avenue of Saint-Cloud in north and the avenue of Seals in the south (the latter being interropue by the railway installations of the station of the Building sites). Between these avenues the buildings of the royal Stables are. On both sides of this central axis are the two districts created under Louis XIV, the Saint-Louis district, and the Notre-Dame district, organized in checkerwork around a central “square”.

Versailles was at the XVIIIe century, according to the standards of the time, a very modern city, which was used as model for the construction of Washington.

Today, the commune is subjected to particular constraints of Urbanisme, which had with the existence of a “safeguarded sector” which covers most of the district Saint-Louis and Notre-Dame. In addition, two thirds of the commune are managed by official organizations (Public corporation of the museum and national field of Versailles, National office of the forests, armed), so that the municipality with the full responsibility for the policy of town planning only on 728 hectares (out of 2618 ha).
