Vernon Sullivan is a American writer imaginary.

The patronym was invented by Boris Vian (which was supposed in the first editions to have translated its Romance S of American). This imaginary writer allowed Boris Vian to publish some of these texts, of a style very different from his usual image, novels very discussed and bearing insult with the moralities of the time, it was even attacked in justice (at the same time as Henry Miller). The novels of Vernon Sullivan have a police screen apparently , and are pretexts with many situations grivoises. Even if one recognizes the espieglery of Vian behind this writing, the aspect “whodunnit American” exceeds simple the parody.

Sullivan deserve to be approached today in a passion way so that, at least as pastiches of Romance American blacks, their qualities appear. It is particularly a question of taking into account an aspect on which one is seldom delayed, namely the implications of the position of " translator " adopted by Vian for Sullivan, in fact a position of " pseudo-translator " since it does not translate the novels but the writing into French with an aim of making accept the existence of an initial original work. However, Vian became thereafter, thanks to this first distorts translation which one found at the time very honourable - and due - the true translator to black novels of Chandler, Cheyney and Cain in particular. Vian controlled enough the topics and techniques of the black novel as well as the American language to manage to carry out nonidentifiable pastiches and translations of quality….

The original creation of this imaginary writer inspired Raymond Queneau which, in its turn, could write several works without being concerned with its own name, under the feather of Sally Mara.

This pseudonym is formed of the name of his/her friend Paul Vernon (1921), saxophonist (and dentist) who was also, inter alia, guitarist of the Abadie orchestra, and the name of Joe Sullivan, an American pianist that they admired at the time.
