Vernantois is a common French, located in the department of the the Jura and the area Franche-Comté.
Geography
Located at 7 km of Lons-the-Salt makers, vernantois is at the fine bottom of the Valley of Sinter slag, with the source even of this river (the sinter slag). Surrounded by three sides of the first Jurassic plate, it is with the foot of the village of Saint-Maur.
Origin of the Name
The history tells that the origin of the name " vernantois" comes in fact from the owner from the mill from vernantois, which was only in the neighborhoods. This owner was called Nantais. People were thus accustomed to saying while speaking about the village: " we go towards Nantais" ; then with the deformations of the language, this little place was transformed into a locality called " vernantois".
History
At the beginning of the Christian era, vernantois was a Gallo-Roman small village vine growers, located on a Roman road which came from lons the salt maker and who lost himself in the first Jurassic plate.
One still finds with vernantois signs of this time to the turning of a way or the bottom of the forest (with noted that the famous Roman road was used until one century ago, but its frequentation was abandoned with the arrival of the asphalt roads)
