the Castle of Bétry

Located on the Polygon at the Northern entry of Vermenton, its first mention goes up with 1157 as a castle (castrum) held in Fief by the counts of Auxerre. Into 1213, the bishop of Auxerre transforms the vault of the castle into parish church. The castle is abandoned but the church was still maintained and used during the following centuries.

the church

The Nave and the gate, which, resembles to him with that of Vézelay and St-Lazare of Avallon, date from XIIe and 13th century, the chorus is of XIVe. The bell-tower points out to us those of St-Eusèbe and St-Germain of Auxerre. The Sarcophagi discovered with XVIIIe, prove to us the presence of an old cemetery which could date from the time Mérovingienne or Carolingienne.

enclosures of the city

In 1368, the inhabitants were authorized by the king to surround the town of a first enclosure set up around the district of the church. In 1404, Charles VI authorizes the population to restore this fortification. It is probably at that time that the cemetery is moved in a place which is unknown for us. The second enclosure, built in 1514 with the authorization of the king Louis XII, surrounded the current agglomeration which was shared in several seigniories for the exercise of justice: the king, the Abbey of Reigny and Bazarnes. Towards 1746, it in one of the turns, is called the " gross tour" and today " turn of Méridien" , that the various audiences of justice and the assemblies of the commune were held. It is here that the prison was established, on the lower level of the building.

The other, Maladrerie or Leper-house, was built in edge of the Cure river. The two hospitals would have been damaged towards 1358 at the time of the English devastations.

the Abbey of Reigny

This monastic establishment, occupied by monks cistercians, was built in edge of Cure towards 1120. The abbey was partly destroyed after the French revolution.

A bridge crossing the Cure at the place of the Large Mills was constuit in 1238 then destroyed during the Wars of religion at the 16th century to make stopping with the Protestants. A reconstruction project did not succeed.

lime kilns, floatation of wood and the vine

The 13th century is marked by economic development around the Cure. Lime kilns, there remains only one bridge spanning the river, several meters of rails and a hill dug for the extraction of limestone. Until 1923, industries of the vine and floatation played a big role for vermentonnais. The floatation of the wood, which was used with the heating of the inhabitants as Paris, will allow the installation of the port and the construction of a stopping. In 1887, the Phylloxera mark a first crushing argument to the wine activity, but, it is possible to still observe in spite of human degradations, of the small dry stone huts that the vine growers had built to protect themselves from the bad weather.
