Verichip

The VeriChip is a registered trademark for an electronic chip of the company Applied DIGITAL, in the shape of grain of rice which can be inserted under the skin of the human beings.

The component comprises a single identification number to 16 digits which can be consulted remotely by a specific reader of data (owner).

This reader can then connect himself to data-processing waiters (a Information system of a hospital for example), in order to recover pointed information on the established person (Blood group, Allergie S, Maladie S, name, number of medical file for a hospital; financial bank account, credit, placements if one used it for the vending machines, etc).

The establishment is done without pain by a very fast operation which resembles a Vaccin.

Applications

The first applications are that of a fast authentification. It is planned to use this technology (or of the close solutions) to supervise and follow condemned old displacements of considered dangerous (with the objective to reduce the risks of repetition) or for the people reached of the Maladie of Alzheimer.

This chip does not make it possible (in the actual position) only to store a serial number of 16 digits, a single identifier. However, of connection with an information system, VeriChip (or its successor) then makes it possible to assist the medical teams if the carrier would be found, for example, only in the Coma, or which it would have of the disorders of the memory.

This kind of technology is already used, for example, for the marking of the cattle population, to follow Baleine S during their displacements, and more recently in American hospitals.

Applied DIGITAL tries to make it generalize, and use for good of other applications (marking of pets, marking of the babies to avoid kidnapping…).

Controversies

Private life

The first controversy around VeriChip rests on concerns of some as regards respect of the private life (of manner comparable with what relates to the multifunction charts, or the many articles on " Big Brother ").

Short distance of reading

If the animal applications (of the products similar to VeriChip) are relatively quite allowed, the human applications (VeriChip is a product which targets them specifically) appear often not very useful:

the automatic identification of a person by a badge without contact already exists (for example for the access to industrial sites or soldiers), but few applications really force to physically bind the identification to the body of the person.
In the medical field, the data concerning a patient are processed with a critical eye by the medical teams. For example, the Blood group is systematically tested rather than to trust information even given by the patient himself.
a fast authentification being able to be realized easily by other means, Biometrics or facial recognition, it would seem that the first applications are rather about the monitoring (old condemned, Maladie of Alzheimer).

But of the applications much more strange emergent: this means of identification can also become a élitiste means of recognition of members of a community (the members of Baja Beach Club in Barcelona are made establish a chip Verichip of Applied DIGITAL Solutions. Harmfulness
