The church

Very party of an oratory in the year 1000. Bompar of Auzon, then owner probably of an old Gallo-Roman villa, made gift in 1095 of the church Holy-Marie-Our-Lady of Vergongheon ( Sanctae Mariae de Vergunici ) to the Abbey of Sauxillanges.   • Louis-Marcel GAUTHIER (1903-1938): Child of Vergongheon, it made party of the crew “Cross of the South” which was one of the three planes to have crossed the Atlantic-South, that is to say 19.767 km in 127h57. The world records of distance in the seaplane were beaten. Louis-Marcel GAUTHIER was decorated with the legion of honor. A street bears its name in Vergongheon.
  • Jean Pomel (1881-1966): Mayor of 1935 to 1965 (stopped between 1941 and 1945 by the German Occupation and the mode of Vichy), it was at the origin of a great number of improvements in the commune (construction of school and HLM, distribution of the water of the Cézallier, repair of the electrical communication,…). The street connecting Vergongheon to Arvant bears its name.
