The Vergobret was a character of the Celtic company which had the supreme office in many Gallic cities. It is César which informs us about his role in its Commentaires about the War of Gaules by indicating it under the terms of princeps civitatis , principatus , magistratus . Currencies with the effigy of Vergobret S were also found at Éduens (statère with the effigy of Dumnorix for example) and the Rèmes.

Elected under the aegis of the druids, each year, the Vergobret had the executive power and legal. It was to him however interdict to leave the limits of the territory of its people: the laws of Éduens prohibited with those which managed the supreme office to cross the borders It could not thus order the army apart from the borders, which made it possible to prevent that it does not monopolize the capacity beyond the term its Magistrature.
