Vereeniging

Vereeniging is a industrial Ville of South Africa, located at the Transvaal in the Province of Gauteng.

Demography and geography

Populated of 350.000 inhabitants, it is located at the edge of the Vaal river.

The town of Vereeniging is composed of 13 communes, townships or localities which are Duncanville, Risiville, Peacehaven, Arcon Park, Unitas Park, Vischgat, Sonland Park, Steel Park, Homer, Roodt' S Gardens, Three Rivers, Sharpeville and Leeuhof.

History

Founded in 1892, the city entered the history thanks to the peace treaty which was negotiated there in 1902 (but signed with Pretoria), putting an end to the Guerre of Boers. It is also in the Township of this industrial town that the March 21st 1960 occurred, the Massacre of Sharpeville.

Preserving and working city, Vereeniging owes its development with the many coal mines of the neighborhoods.

It was the ground of election of Frederik de Klerk, last white president of South Africa.

Territorial administration

Since 2000, Vereeniging belongs to the local municipality of Emfuleni at the side of Vanderbijlpark within the municipal District of Sedibeng.
