Verdun is a common French, located in the department of the Ariège and the area the Midday-Pyrenees. Its inhabitants is called Verduniens.

Geography

Located in the high valley of the Ariège, on the road of the principality of Andorre, Verdun comprises two parts traditionally (that recent constructions tend today to join): barry-of in-high, left old around the church, and barry-of in-low, between the town hall and the driving bridge with the common neighbor, the Huts, by which is made the road service road (RN20) and railway (line Paris Latour de Carol).

The bottom of valley shelters the village. In the high part of the communal territory, a plate (altitude 1000 m, approximately) of triangular form marks an intermediate stage before the steep slopes of the tops. It is crossed by the road of the cornices, which leads to Ax by moved back villages. One finds there a small pond, often dry in summer.

Hydrography: situation " in cuvette" (the village being surrounded of mountains) which justifies a prevention policy of the risks of violent flood by the maintenance of the capacities of flow of the torrent of Crush and the safeguarding of vegetable cover upstream.

The end of the rock of Quié (approx. 1400 m of altitude) is classified in natural reserve to shelter a rare species of Rapace, which one sees planing high the days of good weather. On close cliff, one practices the climbing.

History

History of the village east especially that of the natural disasters which have it several times devastated. The policy of " Restoration of the grounds in mountain " (RTM), installation by the State as from the years 1880, tends to prevent new disasters.
