Verdelais is a common French, located in the department of the the Gironde and the area Aquitaine.

Geography

History

• 11th century]]: construction of a church dedicated to Maurice saint at the edge of the Garonne
• 1112: Géraud of the Low registers, knight leaves out of Holy Land in 1099, where it is illustrated brilliantly at the sides of Godefroy de Bouillon. On its return he becomes hermit and builds a small vault in the honor of Notre-Dame. He dies in 1159
• 1160: Arrived of the Limousin, of the monks Grandmont ains build a monastery known as of Notre-Dame of the Luc
• 1185: 1st miracle
• 1190: charter of Richard Lion-hearted in favor of Notre-Dame de Verdelaye
• 1295,1356-57, 1377: wars; the monastery is destroyed; a statue of the Virgin is hidden
• 1390: the countess of Foix Agnès de Navarre finds in a hole the statue of the Virgin (its mule had gone in the hole); rebuilding of the monastery
• June 1562]]: at the time of the wars of religion, the lord of Duras of the party huguenot takes the city and destroys the places of the pilgrimage
• 1609: visit Mgr of Sourdis
• 1627: arrival of the célestins
• 1630-66: rebuilding of the church and a convent
• 1655: the cure is transferred from Saint-Maurice to Notre-Dame
• about 1730: another convent
• 1778-79: suppression about Célestins
• 1790: inventory of the religious goods
• 1838: following miraculous cures, arrived of the MARISTS

• 1863: inauguration of the martyrdom
• 1895: installation of a site in the Luc
• 1914-18: First World War, 33 died in Verdelais
• 7/1/1924: erection of the Notre-Dame church in minor basilica by Black and white XI
• 1926: félibrée; sermon of the P. Giraudet in Gascon
• 1939-45: Second world war; Spanish refugee camp (1939-40), passage of the group of Bayard resistance in 1944

• François Mauriac lived with the field of '' Malagar '' on the commune of Maixant Saint who is next to Verdelais. It was very related on Verdelais and the Notre-Dame Basilica: “ Verdelais belongs to my personal life; it is the permanent decoration of my childhood and my adolescence …” “ In this chorus Louis XIII, I will see until death, my brother the abbot to extend his arms in cross in front of the furnace bridge where my father child served the mass …” (Foreword with the “ History of the pilgrimage of Notre-Dame de Verdelais ” of the Reverend Père of Rouvray at Grasset).

• Henri of Toulouse Lautrec is buried with the cemetery of Verdelais.
