Veracruz (city)

Veracruz is the first big city of the State de Veracruz with the Mexico, located at 105 km of Jalapa, the capital of State. It is often called Puerto de Veracruz (port of Veracruz) and Ciudad de Veracruz (town of Veracruz) to differentiate it from the State which officially was called Veracruz-Lava and now Veracruz de Ignacio of Llave . In 2000, the population was of approximately 500 000 inhabitants.
The port was founded by Hernán the Cortes which, the first, accosted in 1519 within the framework of the conquest of Mexico for the Spain. The city was named the Rica Villa of Vera Cruz (“the rich city of the true cross”). Main port of the Nouvelle Spain, from which left the money cargoes in direction of Spain, it was badgered as much by the foreign powers as by the Pirate S. The latter managed to plunder the city in 1653 and 1712. In answer to these threats, large the Forteresse San Juan de Ulúa was built on an island in the middle of the port. Started in 1565, it was appreciably widened on several occasions. The Republic was there proclaméee by Santa Anna in 1823. Veracruz is the third big city of the Gulf of Mexico and the first most important port of the east coast of Mexico. Natural port, Veracruz was disputed during the History, and carries the heroic title of “Four times” in reference to the expulsion of the Spaniards in 1821, heroically defended by Santa Anna in 1838 at the time of the occupation by the French fleet during the Guerre of pastry making, and resistance to the occupation of the the United States of America in 1847 and 1914.
During the américano-Mexican War, the forces of the United States led by the general Winfield Scott took the city the March 29th 1847 after a seat. It was captured by the France in 1861. In 1914, the United States controlled it for seven months.
The railway connecting Veracruz to Mexico City - 425 km towards the interior through the mountainous chains - was installed under the administration of Benito Juárez and was inaugurated in 1873.

The walk malecón around the port attracts many tourists, more national than international. The city also has several beaches whose Villa del Mar and Mocambo , unfortunately very dirty and water is extremely polluted there.
Veracruz has also a football team which is called " Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz". It is a team with much history in the country.
