Ventôse
The month of ventôse was the sixth month of the republican Calendrier French.
It corresponded except for a few days (according to the year) at the period going of the February 19th to the March 20th of the Gregorian Calendrier.
In addition, it roughly recovers the period during which the Sun crosses the sign of the Poisson of the Zodiaque tropic.
It drew its name “ from the showers which take place, & the wind which comes to dry the ground of February in March ”, according to the terms of the report/ratio presented to the national Convention the 3 brumaire year II (October 24th 1793) by Fabre d' Églantine, in the name of the “charged commission of the clothes industry of the calendar”.
The decree of the 4 frimaire year II (November 24th 1793) spelled the name of the month ventose , without circumflex accent. The generalized addition of this accent settled gradually, at one unspecified later time.
The republican era being completed on January 1st 1806, it existed forever, in the legal use, of month of ventôse year XIV.
With the difference in the first five months of the republican calendar, which require only three of them each one, and of the last six, for which one needs only two of them each one, five conversion charts are here necessary, because of the character bissextile of the Gregorian years 1796 and 1804, and of the character nonbissextile of the year 1800 (nondivisible by 400) whereas the corresponding republican year is it even bissextile.
