Vendres

Vendres is a common French, located in the department of the Herault and the area Languedoc-Roussillon. Its inhabitants is called the " Vendrois".

Geography

  • Vendres is a commune located in the west of the department of the Herault, in the wine plain of the Biterrois, with 8 kilometers in the south of Béziers.
  • the communal territory includes/understands three definitely differentiated spaces:

    • north is covered with Vignes. The majority of the vines are exploited by vine growers co-operators. There exist great wine fields: Vidalle, the Low Barn, New Savoy, White Puech or Clapiès and Holy-Germaine. This space is dominated by hills, the " puech" in Occitan, like Puech Saint-Massal (33 meters of altitude) and Puech Paradise. The village of Vendres, built on an eminence, dominates vast a pond.
    • In the south of the village, the pond of Vendres limited to the south by the Aude, and further the solid mass from the Clape. The pond measures approximately 6 kilometers of north in the south, less than 4 kilometers of west in east. Altitude does not exceed 2 meters and the center of the pond is on the same level as the sea. It is a vast populated wetland of a particular fauna (many wild ducks) and colonized by a Flore which resists a certain salinity of water. The pond is a zone of hunting for the waterfowl amateurs. In the north of the pond, ancient ruins called " Temple of Vénus" would deserve to be development better. The pond communicates with the sea the Mediterranean by the Grau de Vendres .
    • the littoral zone. The south-east of the commune is bordered by the sea the Mediterranean. Broad a dune cord, exceeding 4 meters in height sometimes, protects the sandy grounds located inside. On these grounds, wine fields (the New World, Monplaisir, the Skiff, Fine sands,…) create interesting wines (especially the rosy ones and white). Towards the west, one finds camp-sites. On the territory of the commune, there no was installation of seaside resort. However, the port of the Chichoulet , located at Grau de Vendres, with the mouth of the Aude, was instigated thanks to the Conchyliculture.
