A polje (stage of ageing) is a flat-bottomed depression closed by rock edges. This formation is characteristic of the mediums Karstique S; it is connected to a Ground water by a natural conduit. This resurgence of the ground water is thus at the origin of a river or flood of the depression.
The polje is a depression closed and being able to reach 3 km broad for 10 km length. They are limestone plains which started to deteriorate at the tertiary era . The weather was hot and wet, there were many water, vegetation and much CO2 because of the decomposition. There was thus carbonation, water is acidified (pH 6) by the CO2 of the atmosphere. This condition generates a more or less large activity according to the area of the sphere. There is then a setting in total solution of the Calcaire, by a combination of the carbon of the water and calcium of the rock CaCO3. Result, the solution of water is charged with calcium and the gas of carbon which gets clear.
Historically, these zones belonged to monarchy and the monasteries, because they are very fertile, bringing a richness and an agricultural economics.
This relief is typical Slovenien karst. One of the most spectacular examples is the Lake Cerniska (Cernisko Jezero) as Slovenia, where one patinates in winter, fishes enormous Slovenien trouts in semi-season and makes graze the animals in summer.
A polje become legendary thanks to the fifth of work of Hercules is that of the lake of Stymphale, in Greece.
In France, one of largest the Polje is on the commune of Cuges-the-Pines (in Provence) forming a natural basin surrounded by hills, one will quote also, not far, the double polje of Signes (VAr).
