Vega Baja del Segura
The Vega Baja del Segura ( Baix Segura in Valencian) is a Spanish Comarque of the Province of Alicante, Valence (Spain) whose chief town is Orihuela.
It is crossed by the Segura.
One can clearly distinguish three zones in Vega Baja:
-
the central zone, which is the " huerta" of Segura: punt and fertile, dedicated to the agriculture of irrigation with a dense but dispersed population.
- the zone interior, more mountainous, with great farms and a sparsity of the population.
- the coast, dedicated to tourism.
In spite of a low rainfall (Orihuela 291 mm, Torrevieja 243 mm), it underwent during the history the risings of the river Segura (1651, 1879,1946,1948,1973,1987,1989). In 1987 20.000 hectares were flooded, which justified work of defense against the Segura river, by increasing the capacity of evacuation of the river which passed from 120 m3/s in certain points to 250 m3/s minimum.
Vega Baja, comarque accustomed to see an emigration towards the provincial capital, was transformed in the last years into the most dynamic zone of the province thanks to the development of the irrigated zones and with tourism; it counts 325.276 inhabitants in 2005. Zone of language Castilian, it belonged to the old Kingdom of Valence since 1296.
Language
Vega Baja is traditionally a zone of language Castilian, excluded the locality of Guardamar del Segura, on the coast of the comarque one, where Valencian is also spoken, although today its use is anecdotic. Certain inhabitants of comarque use dialectal forms similar to those of the Area close to Murcia, like the " seseo" or it not pronunciation of - S and of - the R of the end of the words; this variety of the murcian is it - seseante (in the south-east of the zone speaking the murcian). However, many especially among the young people, adopt a Castilian with the more standard forms; that is due basically to the phenomenon of the globalisation. The massive immigration which the comarque one received since end of the year 90 is at the origin of important colonies English, German and Russian people speaking.
