Ve council of Lateran

The Ve council of Lateran is held of the May 3rd 1512 with the March 16th 1517 in the Basilique Midsummer's Day of Lateran, with Rome. At the end of twelve sessions, the council condemns the Schisme, subjects the publication of the books printed to the authority of the Church and reform the Roman Curie and the clergy.

Ve council of Lateran is convened by Jules II (1503-1513) to make part with that of Pisa, held in 1511 on the initiative of Louis XII of France, supported by the Emperor. It gathers 431 Fathers of the council during the various sessions, those of Pisa ending up joining with that of Lateran in 1513. On the whole, more than one third of the participants represents a nonItalian diocese. To avoid any quarrel on the respective authority of the council and the pope, the council accepts that its decrees affect the form of pontifical bubbles.

On the doctrinal level, the council recognizes the Imprimerie like a gift of God, but subjects, under penalty of Excommunication, the publication of the texts printed with the authority of the pope, the bishops and the Inquisition. This mode of Censure will be translated in 1559 by the creation of the Index. The council also condemns Piero Pomponazzi, professor with the Université of Padoue, which claims on the faith of Aristote that the immortality of the heart cannot be shown and that it is thus only about one article of faith. The council affirms again that philosophy cannot be autonomous compared to the faith.

On the diciplinaire plan, the council launches the reform of the Roman Curia. He recalls the cardinal to their duties and tries to limit the tariffs applied by the Curia. Being the clergy, it again fixes a minimal age for the bishops (30 years), prohibited the Commende and the office plurality of benefit and restricted certain exemptions. However, the council also ratifies the Concordat of Bologna signed on August 18th, 1516, at the time of between the pope Leon X and the King of France François Ier, Concordat which founds the Gallicanisme.

On the pastoral level finally, the council challenges the charges of wear heavy on the pawnshops ( assemble pietatis ). It subjects all the preachers (religious included/understood) to the authority of ordinary and denounces the apocalyptic speeches.
