The Middle Ages
Called Posquières with the the Middle Ages, the city knew a great reputation.
It was the seat of the one of the most notable places of pilgrimage of France, just after that of Notre Dame of Boulogne. Located at the hollow of a small valley named " Vallis viridis" (i.e. " valley verdoyante" , which will give then Vauvert), the church of Notre Dame of the green Valley was the place of this pilgrimage. Saint-Louis went there whereas it was going to Acute-Dead to embark for a crusade.
Rabad de Posquières and Isaac the Blind man developed in his rabbinical accademy their knowledge and comments as for the Kabbale Juive. Several street names attest this presence of the Jewish community of Vauvert: the street of the Jews, the street of the Doctor's caps in particular. A fragment of one of the pillars of the synagog was found in the court of the house where the religious building was.
Wars of religion
Touched by the wars of religion, the city was violently marked. The church and its dependences were destroyed during the conflict. The Protestant meet there in two temples (the small one and the large Temple).
Until in second half of the 20th century, the cemetery remained divided by a wall separating the catholic and Protestant burials.
Periods modern and contemporary

The proverb " With the Vauvert" devil;
This proverb is certainly very famous but one wonders sometimes where it takes its sources. There are two legends:
- the very first version is not really vauverdoise. At the 11th century, the king Robert the Piles decides to establish his residence out of Paris, in a planted small valley of vines then named Vauvert (the green valley). This small valley is not other than what we know today like the Garden of Luxembourg.
With its death, the castle is quickly given up and becomes very quickly a worrying place. Its walls fall in ruin and are used as refuge with a whole population of brigands and beggars, which turns into to castle of Vauvert a true court of the miracles. Testimonys of the time evoke cries and howls while coming. One concludes from it quickly that it is a place malefic, which will give rise to the popular expression outward journey with the Vauvert devil.
- Maintaining the second version relates to the town of Vauvert well. During all the medieval time, Vauvert is a village stage for the pilgrims of St Jacques de Compostelle. The prosperous city, becomes large and famous like its church and its medieval castle which overhung the hill of Castellas. It is thus thought that this expression would have significances with the way of Compostelle and a relationship with the church and the marshes of the commune. Some say that it sagissait of a rumor which circulated is saying that piles would have seen the devil in the church, others think that the legend is rather related to the marshes very frequent at the time because there were even marshes there or is nowadays located Esperion and all the neighborhoods of the road of the bridges of Tourradons.
At that time and this since the writings of
Ovide during the
Antiquity, one thought that the marshes were the entrails of the hell. Thus one said goes to the Vauvert devil while wanting to say " goes in Enfer" , which was at that time a proverb very malefic and horrible. But the only problem with this version it is that at that time Vauvert was called Posquières. Thus the city it would have adapted the proverb or said one " goes to the Posquières" devil; ?
A question which one will hope to solve one day…
