Etymology

The Vaulx-in-Vellum etymology is not certain. The Latin term “Valles in Velleno” meant low valley, or “place”, of the ewes (of Latin hairy, velleris); Vellum then evoking a cattle-rearing area and extension giving its name to the immense forest which covered until the beginning of the Middle Ages, Dauphine Bottom: country of Vellum. This assumption seems most probable - another explanation being that this toponym is related to some characteristics of the vegetation.
