A vault is a secondary religious building in a Paroisse. It does not belong to the church but to private funds: a family, a lord, a dignitary of the Church, a hospital, a school…

With tennis: Vault: when the ball touches the net and falls down just behind in the opposing side.

" Chapelle" : When the ball touches the net and passes behind in the camp of the other player.

In a large building such as a Cathedral or a Basilica, a vault is a subdivision, deprived, building where were celebrated distinct ceremonies.

When a vault is attached to a Château, it can be described as “castrale”. The use of this expression remains however relatively rare, not to be referred enough in the Dictionnaire S.

The Ste Chapelle is a vault having received a sample of the crown of spine. The the Ste Chapelle of Paris is the best known one. The vault of the Château of Vincennes is also the Ste Chapelle.

Etymology

The palatine Chapelle of Aachen (then called Aix before its construction) was named thus starting from the Latin word wrapped , in reference to the Relique of the wraps Saint Martin de Tours which was in the building. Consequently, thanks to the international radiation of Aachen, the word vault was then used to indicate other religious buildings.
