Vaugelas college
The college Vaugelas is a French of secondary education and higher establishment of Savoy. It is located with 10 rue Jean-Pierre Veyrat, with Chambéry.
History
In 1564, the Jésuites are seen authorized to establish a Collège with Chambéry by the duke of Savoy. The Collège of Jesuits opens in 1566, then, when Victor-Amédée II interdict with the Jesuits to teach in Savoy in 1729, the establishment becomes Royal Collège . It occupies since its creation various buildings chambériens.In 1792, the Révolutionnaires French invade Savoy and annex it to the France. The college is closed during three years. The national Convention reopens the establishment in 1795 under the name of Central École of the Mont Blanc . The central École is closed in 1803, under the Consulat. However, it is replaced by the communal secondary École as of the following year. The municipality of Chambéry indeed has just bought old the convent of the Visitation (current site of the college) in order to install the school in its buildings.
To spring 1805, Napoleon goes Milan to gird the iron crown of king d' Italie. During its voyage, it makes stopover in Chambéry the April 17th (27 germinal An XIII) and visits the elementary school. One then counts there 260 pupils and 7 professors. In the hope to see the title of college granted to the secondary school, its director, Georges-Marie Raymond, makes equip the boarders in military behavior, with the image of the high-school pupils. In spite of an operation (walk in column) ordered by the Emperor itself, the statute of the establishment remains unchanged. In 1810, however, the secondary school becomes Imperial Collège .
At the time of the return of Savoy to the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, in 1815, the establishment becomes Royal Collège and teaching is again entrusted to the Jesuits as of 1823. With the college, 250 interns and 300 external make their studies then. Nevertheless, in 1848, in the process of democratization which followed the revolution to France, the king Charles-Albert makes again dissolve the Society of Jesus and the establishment is reorganized in National Collège .
The April 22nd 1860, Savoy is attached to France by Plébiscite. The state education is then reorganized in the area. By decree of the June 13rd 1860, old the National Collège is abolished and replaced by the Imperial Lycée of Chambéry : it is the first creation of a Lycée in the Country of Savoy. The city is again owner of the buildings. The first re-entry is made on Saturday, November 3, 1860 for the 85 interns and the following day for the 224 external ones who come to attend the mass of the Holy Spirit; the first courses are given the Monday the 5th.
In 1870, with the fall of Napoleon III, the Imperial Lycée becomes National Lycée . Between 1889 and 1892, the city implements great work for the boring of the street Marcoz. The municipality benefits from it to refit the buildings. Other work will follow, in the years 1950.
In 1966, with the appearance of the school co-education in France, the college of boys of Chambéry becomes the Lycée Vaugelas : he is baptized name of the academician Claude Favre de Vaugelas, wire of president Favre.
Current buildings
The convent of the Visitation was founded in 1624 per Jacqueline Favre, the girl of the first president of the Sénat of Savoy. The Visitandines settled initially with the Recluse. About 1630, they move in the buildings of the current Vaugelas college. The vault of the Visitation, contiguous to their convent, is started in 1648 and is completed in 1726. With the Revolution, the sisters are driven out buildings and the State takes possession of it. Under the Consulate, the town of Chambéry repurchase them to install its secondary school there.Under the Restoration, the Jesuits, then in load of the college, undertake the construction of the building of the Clock (building out of H). It begins in 1827 to finish in 1830. The main courtyard this new wing becomes the main entrance of the establishment. The town of Chambéry returns in possession of the buildings at the time of the annexation of Savoy to France. Thereafter, between 1889 and 1892, the buildings of the convent are destroyed by the municipality during the boring of the street Marcoz, and are replaced by the wing Marcoz, which skirts it, and the House Minerve, which connects the new buildings to the building of the Clock. It carries this nickname because the goddess of the knowledge and the intelligence appears in Bas-relief with the Fronton. The caretaker's lodge this house, which gives on the public garden Daisay, becomes the main entrance of the college then. Old abbey, only the vault of the Visitation remains today, with sometimes the nickname of Vaugelas Vault.
In the years 1950, the Marcoz wing is seen prolonged constructions along the street Georges-Marie Raymond. A gymnasium is in particular built there.
In 1998, the college sees building a school restaurant in its enclosure. This complex includes/understands a restaurant Self-service and a Cafétéria. Inaugurated in 1999, he is baptized Espace Pierre Balmain, former student and large dressmaker.
The District council of the Rhone-Alps program the reorganization of the college in 2001-2003, and work is imminent.
Teaching
The Vaugelas college is a general practitioner establishment which exempts active courses of the second to the final , for obtaining the Baccalauréat S S, ES and L. Recently, two specialized dies offer to the pupils to reconcile high level secondary studies and sport or music.From 1996 to 1997, a pole of Preparatory classes at the universities created with the adjustment of physics laboratories, chemistry and engineerings. The second phase of installation of the pole finishes in 1998 with the data-processing laboratory, the room of optics and the rooms of work.
