Vaucouleurs (Meuse)

Vaucouleurs is a common French, located in the department of the Meuse and the area Lorraine.

• Robert de Baudricourt, governor of Vaucouleurs and companion of Jean d' Arc.
• Madam of Barry, born Jeanne Long-beaked with Vaucouleurs in 1743.

History

In 1429, although wedged between the duchy of Lorraine (depend on the saint worsens) and that of Burgundy, pledged to the English, the town of Vaucouleurs is faithful to Charles VII.

This is why Jeanne d' Arc comes to request an escort from it to go near the king.

Historical places

• the SAINT LAURENT church was built between 1782 and 1785. Its ceiling is decorated with frescos. It shelters also a beautiful pulpit going back to 1717.

• the door of France acted at the same time of door of the castle and door of the city. Built initially at the 13th century it was borrowed by Jeanne d' Arc and her escort on February 23rd, 1429, leaving without return its native Lorraine. It is not in Lorraine of place more moving that this one, by where the victory, after one century of disasters, passed in the camp of France. The current vestiges go back to a restoration carried out in of 1733 on the remainders of the primitive wall.

• the town hall was built between 1847 and 1848 with the site of an old convent.

• the equestrian statue of Jeanne d' Arc is located on the place of the Town hall. Out of bronze, of a weight of 2,5 tons, it was carried out by Halbout of Tanney in 1951 for the town of Algiers. It there is vandalisée in 1962 and will be brought back to France before being restored and set up on May 8th 1966 in the city having armed the holy one.

• Of the castle of Robert de Baudricourt where the destiny of Jeanne decided, there remains the crypt of the Castrale Vault where Jeanne collects herself. It shelters a virgin of the 13th century called Our-Lady-of-Vaults.

• the vault castrale which surmounts it is a rebuilding of 1923.

• Installed in the right wing of the Town hall, a museum points out the main role held by the city in the johannic epopee.
