Vathek, tale Arab is a Roman Gothic writes in language French E by the writer English William Beckford in 1782.

Vathek was published in its original language in 1787 after having appeared the previous year in England in an English translation of Samuel Henley. Beckford stated to have produced this emblematic early work of the Roman Gothic, which counted Byron among its more enthusiastic admirors, in three days and two nights of at a stretch, without the same to have taken sorrow to strip itself and which it was falls ill with its completion.

Fictionalized version of the life of the caliph Al-Wathiq, Vathek is the chronicle of the fall of a caliph who abjures the Islam to engage, with his Nouronihar ally, in a succession of licentious and deplorable activities intended to acquire supernatural capacities to him. Instead of reaching these capacities, Vathek goes down, at the end of the account, in the hell controlled by the demon Eblis where it is condemned to wander without end and voice.
