Biography

He studies initially with Orel in a Séminaire, of which he becomes the chief of the chorus at fourteen years. He enters then to the Conservatoire of Moscow, but does not have enough money to finance these studies. It is allowed at the school of the philharmonic Company of Moscow, and receives lessons of bassoon and composition with Alexandre Ilyinski. It occurs with the bassoon, the drinking cups or the triangle in the orchestras of theater, and adds to that of menus work.

Tchaïkovski supports it and recommends it near several orchestras, but because of its bad health, Kalinnikov must leave to seek a better climate in the Crimea. It settles with Yalta for the remainder of its life and composes there most of its works. Rachmaninov and Tchaïkovski managed to make some publish some, in particular its Second symphony . The Première met a great success of alive sound in Europe.

Among his compositions, one will retain especially his two symphonies, of the orchestral parts (of which music for the Tsar Boris of Alexis Tolstoï) and many songs; as well as a opening, Bylina , of which one of the topics has an astonishing resemblance to the music of the Soviet anthem of Alexandre Alexandrov, which was an argument to preserve it in the anthem of current Russia.
