Vashon Island

Vashon Island or Vashon-Maury Island one of the largest islands is located in the Puget Sound not far from the town of Seattle in the state of Washington at the North-West of the the United States. Belonging to the county of King, one counted there a population of 10.123 people at the time of the census of 2000. Of a surface of approximately 96 km ², it is comparatively 10% broader than the island of Manhattan whereas its population is 150 times weaker.

The island has of two terminals for Ferry which thus connects it to the continent and in particular to the towns of Seattle and Tacoma. There does not exist bridge connecting the island to the continent with the result that transport by ferry is vital for the island.

The island was named on May 28th, 1792 by the explorer George Vancouver according to her friend James Vashon who belonged to the Royal Navy. At that time, the island was separated from its close island Maury Island but today a Isthme builds by the American army connects the two islands.

The coordinates of Vashon Island are (47|24|58|NR|122|28|6|W). According to the office of the American census, its total surface area is of 95,8 km ².

Demography

According to the census of 2000, out of the 10.123 inhabitants, one found 4.193 households and 2.838 families in the island. The population density was of 105,7 inhabitants per km ² and the density of dwellings (4.867 on the whole) was of 51 dwellings per km ². The population was made up of 93,61% of white, of 0,45% Afro-Americans, 0,7% of Amerindians and 1,56% the Asian ones.

30,90% of the households had children of less than 18 years, 56,20% were married couples. 23,2% of the population had less than 18 years, 4,6% between 18 and 24 years, 25,1% between 25 and 44 years, 34,0% between 45 and 64 years and 13,1% above 65 years. The Middle Age was 44 years. The proportion of women was of 100 per 91 men.

The average revenue of a household was of 58.261 dollars.

Economy

The economy is strongly influenced by the residents working with Seattle and Tacoma. Important agriculture in the past currently almost completely disappeared following the real pressure.
