Vasa

The Vasa , of its complete name Swedish Regalskeppet Vasa is a Warship Swedish of the 17th century, built for the king Gustave II Adolphe of Sweden, of the dynasty of Vasa, between 1626 and 1628.

The king interfered much in the construction of the ship, while insisting that it is lengthened significantly and includes/understands a second bridge for the gun S, to satisfy his wish to have the most powerful ship ever built, extremely of 64 guns. The naval architect who supervised construction being in addition deceased during work, the building site had to be left under the monitoring of his inexperienced apprentice.

These modifications led to the assembly of a boat different from the original plans, well too long and high for its width. Thus, at the time of its setting to water the August 10th 1628, Vasa, symbol of the Swedish power, was lying with the sea by a gust of wind and sank in water of the port of Stockholm, involving with him some 50 team members. The excessive weight, the Camouflage of the dead works too important, the too low width was combined so that this drama arrives also brutally. The tests of stability preliminary to the setting with water had been cancelled in precipitation, whereas they tended to show that the ship was inclined dangerously under the steps of 30 sailors trying to make it rock while running from one side to another of the bridge. The king had obviously not been informed of this cancellation.

After the Shipwreck, the major part of the guns of Bronze which armed the ship were recovered using a rudimentary Scaphandre. It was necessary for that to dismount the bridge in several places.

It is only in 1956 that Anders Franzén, a Archéologue and Engineer, discovered that the Taret, a worm which lives in salt water and devours the wrecks out of wooden could not survive in the the Baltic. It put forward the idea then that Vasa can be preserved, and discovered it the same year, failed by 32 meters basic. The reinflation of the ship was carried out the April 24th 1961 after a phase of preparation which lasted of 1959 to 1961.

The conservation with the free air of the ship was made possible by the use of Macrogol, whose Vasa was impregnated during 17 years before being slowly dried. Work since showed that this technique made wood very breakable.

More: 14000 objects out of wooden were also found, including in particular 700 Sculpture S, which were the expression of the power of king de Suède. Six veil S also be went up sea-bed; they are the oldest veils in the world.

Vasa is exposed to Stockholm in the Musée Vasa.
