Varroa

Varroa is one of Acarien S parasitic of the Abeille S. It belongs to the possible causes or supporting Syndrome of collapse of the colonies of bees.

The female of Varroa presents a form elliptic, squat, broader than long. It measures of 1 with 1,2mm out of 1,5 with 1,8mm, which makes it perfectly visible with the naked eye. The cuticule is of sunk color brown and the whole of the body is covered with silks. The male is of rather round form of yellowish color. Its diameter is approximately 0,8 with 0,9mm.

Lifestyle

The males live exclusively in the cells of the couvain of the bee, whereas the females also meet on the adult bee, in and outside the hive. Only the females are able to winter.

The cycle of reproduction of Varroa proceeds exclusively in the couvain.

The egg is laid in a cell by a female founder which penetrates there right before the operculation and lets itself there lock up. Several females can even find themselves in the same cell.

Each female lays from 2 to 8 eggs, of which the first is always an egg of male. The following eggs would be always eggs female.

The female lays an egg approximately every 30 hours. If this egg is an egg of male, its development will take from 6 to 7 days; if it is about an egg of female, its development is a little longer and hard from 8 to 9 days. The lately hatched male fertilizes his/her sisters as of their birth.

In a cell of worker, a female founder of Varroa lays on average 3 eggs (1 male and 2 females), whereas in a cell of male, it lays on average 4 of them (1 male and 3 females).

The young Varroa females, fertilized by their brother, leave the cell at the time of the " naissance" bee.

After a time of a few days, the cycle of infestation can start again.
