In 1730, the Martin brothers of Paris, develop an imitation of lacquer containing Copal, the varnished Martin , intended to compete with the lacquers of China and the Japan. This varnish, less expensive for the decoration of furniture than the application of panels of lacquers, was also used to harmonize pieces of furniture at the height shaping, the panels of lacquer not supporting to be too much rounded. The Martin varnish created the connection between these panels so that the piece of furniture is visually homogeneous. It had however its own existence by reproducing and interpreting the works of painters of the time applied to the pieces of furniture as a decoration. The Martin varnish was also used at the XIXe century on the furniture of style. Its large defect is to be fragile with water.
