The variety is a big room of spectacle where artists of varieties occur. Anglicism at the beginning, this word will be used by Joseph Oller to indicate a variety show.

Theory

The topic of painting is extremely used. The variety as the Cirque influenced the music. Circus and variety divert by proposing a succession of numbers and by calling upon various emotions of the public. There is a form of joining, rupture and connection between the numbers. Very deviates from the Réalisme and psychology (like made Satie and Marinetti in their music).

The Futurisme would explain its vision of the movement:

  • the variety is new and without traditions.
  • There is the comic one and an erotic excitation.
  • the actors create eternally.
  • the Crowned and the serious one are destroyed.
  • There are a dynamism of form and colors.
  • the public collaborates.

History

The great time of the short variety, with the increasing urbanization, of half of the 19th century until the years 1920, where the vulgarizing of the gramophone, the radio and the talking films unrelentingly will cause its decline.

In Paris

  • the varieties of Paris, known as “of varieties”, were rather numerous: the Olympia, the Empire, the Apollo, the Alhambra, Variety of the Fields-Élysées, Bobino, Stars… Many rooms in province and even abroad bore the name of “variety of Paris”.
  • on April 12th, 1893, Goulue, artist of Montmartre, inaugurates Olympia, variety built by Joseph Oller on the waste ground of a small open park. After many changes of owners and restorations (the brothers Isolated, Jacques Charles, Raphel Beretta and Leon Volterra, Paul Franck…), years 1911-1914 are more the records, until aù Krach of 1929 which constrained Jacques Haïk to transform it into cinema. It will be necessary to await the arrival of Bruno Coquatrix to see there the return of some operettas in 1953 and the first variety turn on February 5th 1954.
  • Meanwhile, whereas the variety passed through a crisis due to the progès of the cinema, Mitty Goldin had opened in 1934 the A.B.C which quickly became the great variety of Paris where until 1950 the largest artists of varieties occurred. From 1950, a.B.C was devoted especially to the Opérette, before disappearing in 1964.
