Variations There is Topic: Red House

Even if the discs of Rock published in the Eighties let it only seldom hear, the guitar were then extremely popular. Not only the reviews to learn the guitar multiplied (Joe Satriani and Steve Vai made more than one cover), but the collections of fingering charts of the most known guitarists were also sold them very well.

The collections devoted to the three albums of the Experiment were sold enough so that the idea to produce albums of Jimi Hendrix intended for the only apprentice-guitarists makes his way: were 5 new albums thus published jointly per Are You Experienced? Ltd. (Douglas Alan) and Hall Leonard Publishing Corporation. This collection, published under the name of The Jimi Hendrix Reference Library comprised five following volumes:

  • Fuzz, Feedback and Wah Wah
  • Whammy Bar and Finger Grease
  • Variations One has Topic: Red House
  • Octavia and Univibes
  • Rhythms

Only Variations One has Topic: Red House will hold our attention here: four other volumes generally consist of short extracts illustrating the guitaristic techniques of Jimi Hendrix.

Variations One has Topic: Red House can be regarded as a true album, insofar as it is Hendrix the improviser who is proposed here, and the pieces illustrating the talent of Hendrix are in theory whole. On the six versions presented then, only the second was not new. The last title is a wink sympathetic nerve: it is a version of John Lee Hooker, accompanied by Booker T. Jones with the organ, Randy California with the rhythmic guitar, Phil Chen with low, and Bruce Gary (the collaborator the Douglas one) with the battery.
