Charles De Coster (August 27th 1827, Munich - May 7th 1879, Ixelles) is a Belgian writer French-speaking. Born in Munich from a Flemish father and a Walloon mother, Charles De Coster studies with the Universit3e libre de Bruxelles where, formed with the spirit of the free examination, it acquires democratic convictions and anticlericals. Initially journalist, he becomes professor of literature at the School of war of Brussels. He devotes himself then to the literature.

the Flemish Legends , published in the review Uylenspiegel in which he collaborates, are a certain success but the remainder of its work had to await the generation of the Jeune Belgium, that of Camille Lemonnier, Georges Eekhoud for example, to be recognized.

The chief of work of Coster, the Legend and the heroic, merry and glorious Adventures of Ulenspiegel and Goedzak Blade to the country of Flandres and elsewhere , displeased in Belgian the conformists mediums. Known in the whole world, translated in all the European languages, he is ignored in his own country.

the Legend of Ulenspiegel incarnates the heart and the spirit of the Flanders of which it evokes the folklore, the climate and the traditions. It mixes the history and the myth, the adventure of a family to that of people. De Coster, French-speaking writer, reconstitute one time as a poet visionary and create a new language in the great tradition rabelaisienne. Till Ulenspiegel (see Till mischievous the) is especially the defender of the Freedom, that which fought against the oppression of Philippe II and the pile cluster, the hero who drew up himself against all the forms of oppression. It there has more than 70 years, Abel Lefranc, of the Collège de France, asked “that France, in particular, dream that Ulenspiegel honors its language” and that it finally decides to fraternally install it “in its literary Pantheon”. Work will be a universal success. Gerard Philippe adapted his work to the screen but the best film adaptation will remain that of the Soviet realizers Alov and Naoumov produced in 1977.
