Varces-Allières-and-Risset

Varces-Allières-and-Risset are a common French, located in the department of the Isere and the area the Rhone-Alps.

Its inhabitants is called the Varçois .

Geography

Varces is located at the south of Grenoble in the Valley of Gresse and is skirted by the Drac. Varces, thanks to the naturally pure water of Rochefort, feeds out of water part of the Grenoble-native agglomeration.

History

The commune of Varces Allières and Risset extends from the edges of Drac to the peak of the Vercors, between the communes of Vif, St Paul de Varces, Claix, Pont-de-Claix and Lans in Vercors…

It occupies four stages of altitudes: - The plain of Drac and Gresse (280m) - The plate of Allières, Uriol and Rochefort (400m with 600m) - The plate of St Angel (1000m with 1200m) - The peak of the Vercors and the Peak St Michel (1966m)

This territory has been populated for more than 5.000 years. Recent archaeological excavations confirmed these occupations known for a long time: burial of the Bronze Age, sites of Gallic huts, oppidum of Rochefort, Gallo-Roman, ballistic sites to the end of the 1st millenium, castle of the Middle Ages testify some. The Tower of St Giraud, remains feudal castle, still draws up some stone sides on the hill of Uriol. In 1255, the " mandatement" or " terre" on which drew up itself the castle belonged to the Knight Lanthelme Paviot who sold it with this date with the Dolphin Gigue VII. Then in 1289, the Humbert Dolphin exchanged the stronghold and the castle of Varces against the stronghold and theStrong one of Bellecombe above Chapareillan, property of Emery of Briançon: the Dolphin found the advantage of being thus more capable to monitor the intrigues of its neighbor the Count of Savoy. As for the house of Briançon it gained a more peaceful stronghold.

The enumeration of 1540, indicated that mandatement of Varces was made then of five parishes: - San Pietro di Varcia (St Pierre de Varces) - San Girardi (Holy Giraud) - San Paoli (St Paul de Varces) - San Ricci (Risset) - Fontanilibus (Fontagneux)

The registers of civil statue were held by the priests until 1792.

At the XVIIe century, Lord de Briançon made increase the castle of Varces with square turrets in the plain of St Paul, with the foot of his castle of St Giraud, in ruins. But in 1637, its Louis descendant of Briançon was in the need for selling the parishes of Risset and Fontagneux, the ground of St Angel to its neighbor the lord of Allières, Lord Samson de Périssol. It is what formed, since 1654 mandatement of Allières.

Today, the two castles of Varces and Allières always draw up their proud frontages. 1792 marked the end of the Seigniories and the creation of two communes: Varces and Allières, which will be joined together only in 1955 to form the new commune of Varces Allières and Risset.

Consequently its history is that many French communes. With the shelter of believed of the torrents since the construction of the dams, in the middle of the 19th century, agriculture developed. The vine occupied some of vast surfaces. The establishment of chemical industries since 1914 in Pont-de-Claix attracted the local labor. During fifty last years the population increasing, of new residences were built. Modern agriculture is still quite present, especially in the plain.

Varces has another richness: most of water " naturally pure" , feeding the Grenoble-native agglomeration is pumped on our territory, in Rochefort.

Since many years, Varces shelters the District of Reyniès where is based the 93e Régiment of Artillery of Mountain of the Army; it is the only French regiment to have double specificity artillery and mountain.

Our common was from time immemorial crossed by the great lanes: sees Roman, royal road and today a51 highway, which drains a supported circulation, thus returning the calm one in the center town.

Varçois have important utility services. A college and a new school complex opened their doors in 2003.
