Varanus
The family of the Varanidae contains one kind (monotypic family), called Varanus , or monitor .
They are lizards, in general of big size. They are distinguished from the others Lézard S by their long neck, their triangular cranium and their language bifide - as that of a Serpent. All the species of monitors are carnivorous S (with share a species which nourishes also fruits). They have jaws powerful and members armed with 5 sharp-edged claws. The monitors are Ovipare S, they have outer ears and eyelids. They cannot " lâcher" their tail like certain lizards. The species closest to the monitors are the Héloderme S and the false monitors (which do not have outer ears). The monitors are found in the areas tropical and under-tropical of the Africa, the Asia and the Australia (In this last case, they are called " goanna"). The majority of the species come from Oceania, partially for lack of competition mammalienne.
