Morphological data
The monitor of savannas is a small monitor, it measures between 80 and 100 cm. Its skin is maroon clear or gray with tasks white on the back.
Distribution
The Varanus exanthematicus is originating in Africa, of the south of the the Sahara, except for the Western tropical forest.
Lifestyle
The monitor of savannas is terrestrial, its lifestyle is diurnal.
Conditions of breeding
Choice of the animal
It is preferable to choose in priority a specimen young and born in captivity when it is possible. The animal should be aggressive neither towards you nor towards its congeneric. It must eat with spirit, the monitors are very “goulus”, thus check its voracity.
It is then necessary to observe and to detect all deformations, wounds, infections, cesspool, parasites,… if you locate one of these signs, do not take the animal. Moreover, observe the general aspect of the monitor, it does not have to be thin, its bones should not be apparent on the level of the crossing of the basin and the tail.
Social behaviors
The monitor exanthématicus is one of the most flexible monitors. It is the most common terrarium species.
Terrarium
The terrarium must be of type arid and roomy. A terrarium of 200 from length, 60 of depth and 70 height is a minimum for a couple of monitor of savannas. The ground can be made up of shavings, of sand washed beforehand, to see disinfected. Stones and branches must be laid out, as well as a hollow tree trunk. It is also necessary to propose to him water a vat occupying 1/4 of the surface of terrarium.
A solar lamp or neon must be proposed with the top of the branch, the terrarium can be heated with a heating cord (see the terrarium part of the site), an intense lighting must be also provided. The room temperature of terrarium during the day must be included/understood between 30° and 32°C, but can reach much more under lamp UV. The night, the temperature is lowered to 22° C.
Food
The Varanus exanthematicus is also carnivorous Insectivore but.- Coleopter S, Orthoptère S, caterpillar S, cricket S, Grasshopper S, Cockroach S,…
- Gastropodous S, egg S, Mouse in minor amount
Reproduction
Hibernation
During the wintering, it is shown very voracious, especially July at November. The majority of the monitors which arrive to Europe were ever subjected to the hibernation.
Couplings
The couplings take place in January.
Bridge and incubation
A score of eggs approximately are buried or simply deposited in a hollow shaft. They are forms oval and measure approximately 66mm on 35mm.They must be incubated at a temperature varying of 26° with 35°C, the eggs hatch approximately 170 days after the laying.
Newborns
The newborns measure approximately 20 centimetres with the blossoming. A daily food must be to them proposed, then the frequency of the meals will decrease with the age; up to 2 meals per week for an adult monitor
