Vans

Vans (Occitan Los Vans ) is a common French, located in the department of the Ardèche and the area the Rhone-Alps.

The inhabitants of Vans are the Vanséens .

Geography

Chief town of canton of the south of the Ardeche, the village of Vans occupies the center of a basin close to the river Chassezac. It is dominated in the south by the Greenhouse of Bar, last Eastern top of the the Cevennes of Bottom Vivarais. In 2001, Vans becomes " city-porte" Regional natural park of the Mounts of Ardeche.

Very tourist village for the summer period, a traditional market holds place every saturday morning.

Many activities can be practiced near Vans; walk, climbing, spéléo, horsemanship, but also canyoning, bathe, fishing and canoe kayak in the throats of the Chassezac.

History

Vans depended on the abbey of Saint-Gilles. The city passed to the Reform to the 16th century; in 1629, it turned over to Catholicism, and the fortifications were dismantled.

Died of professor Ollier (1900), a world subscription made it possible to raise two monumental statues bronzes some, realized by Boucher, one in Vans, the other on the Ollier place with Lyon.
