Vandalia is a city in the Comté of Fayette, on the Kaskaskia. Although having known a glorious past, it remained a small town. It is the seat of the Comté of Fayette, the Vandalia State House State Historic Site and the terminus of the Trunk road or Route of Cumberland which connected it to Cumberland and which forms now part of U.S. Road 40.

En 1819, Vandalia became the capital of the Illinois instead of Kaskaskia but, in 1839, Springfield replaced it in its turn.
