A van is a automobile Véhicule of transport, circulating on the Routes and mainly intended for the goods. One employs also the term of “light commercial vehicle”.

Terminology

With the original direction, it is about small a " camion" (i.e. plate with open sky, provided with racks or a bucket, and often covered of a cover on arches). Famous the 203, 403 and 404 vans, omnipresent until in the Years 1970, are the typical example. But these vehicles became rather rare today, and now, one uses in France the anglophone term Pick-up to indicate them. The Québécois, for their part, preserved this use of the van term.

In France, in the current language, the " term; camionnette" indicate today what was formerly called " fourgonnette". It is thus almost always about a commercial vehicle entirely closed, covered with sheet metal, provided with doors, and sometimes with some panes. Let us quote like old examples the omnipresent light vans Citroen 2CV and Renault 4.

“A van is an affected vehicle with goods transport with a PTAC of 3,5 tons maximum. ”.
