Valmy is a common French, located in the department of the Marne and the area Champagne-Ardenne.

History

The Valmy September 20th, 1792 took place the Bataille of Valmy which allowed the proclamation of the Republic the following day. Valmy is also the name of one of the first groups of resistant, founded during the summer 1940 per Raymond Burgard and Rene Iché. One also calls battles of Valmy the haircut consisting in bringing back the points towards the back using grips planted on the face

Demography

Economy

Valmy is a rural district of the Argonne and the agricultural activity is dominant. The essence of the territory of the commune is composed of cereal cultures. To note that Valmy gave its name to a beer created by farmers of the village starting from barleys cultivated on the spot.

More the large company of Valmy is a shipping company (Bruaux Transport) employing 29 worker.

The highway A4 which crosses the commune brings two service areas whose economic activity is important. Their proximity of the classified historic site of the battle of Valmy could help with the development of tourism and a project of connection of the site by one of its surfaces is being studied.

Places and monuments

The mill of Valmy

  • celebrates It Moulin of Valmy which symbolizes the French victory over the Prussian at the time of the Bataille of Valmy in 1792. This mill did not exist any more at the beginning of the 20th century.
In preparation for the 150e birthday of the battle of Valmy, the mayor of the village, Andre Procureur, decides to reinstall a mill with Valmy thanks to a national subscription. The mill comes then from Attiches. The work, started into 1939 is stopped by the war and a provisional roof is installed. Work begins again after the war and the mill is inaugurated on September 20th, 1947.

The mill was entirely destroyed at the time of the Tempête of 1999. The shortly after the storm Bruno Bourg-Broc puts forward the idea of launching a national subscription for the rebuilding of the mill of Valmy. It is followed by the whole of the elected officials of the area and association for the rebuilding of the mill of Valmy is created. In 2004, a company of Villeneuve d' Ascq is selected to complete work. A particular care was taken so that the mill is in conformity with that of origin. The mill of Valmy is inaugurated, on Tuesday, September 20, 2005, by Michele Alliot-Marie, Minister for the Defense of France.

The monument and the Kellermann vault

A large statue of Kellermann holding up its saber and its hat was set up near the site of the famous battle. In front of this statue, an obelisk contains the heart of the general who wanted to be buried near his brave men soldiers. A vault was also built on the site. It contains the heart of the princess Ginetti, the back little girl of the General whose gifts allowed the installation of the site.

The statue of Miranda

Francisco de Miranda is an officer originating in the Venezuela, he is one of the heroes of the independence of the Latin America. In 1784, he traverses Europe to find allies. It arrives to France in 1792 and joint at the Of Gironde ones. He takes part thus in the first victory of the French Republic. A statue of this general was set up in the village of Valmy and was inaugurated in the presence of the ambassador of Venezuela.

The bust of Bolivar

The general Simon Bolivar took again the work of release of Miranda and offered independence to Venezuela. Its bust faces the statue of Miranda. It is flowered every year by the ambassador of Venezuela. At its sides, is exposed a tank of the army of the the United States having taken part in the release of the village in 1944.
