Characteristics of the temples
Temple of Héraclès (Temple A)
The temple of Héraclès is located close to the road, in the east of the park, close to the entry, all beside door IV (Aurea carried) . The identification of this temple dedicated to Héraclès is given by Cicéron itself, Questeur in Sicily in the year -75. In its famous charges against Glasses, it evokes a large statue of Bronze of Héraclès, in a temple located close to the Agora (low agora , close to door IV): its lips and its chin were worn, says it, by be touched by the pilgrims, and Glasses projected to seize some!
The temple of Héraclès is oldest of all those located close to the southern wall, going back to the beginning of - Ve century. It rests on a base with three degrees. Its plan is in conformity with that of the majority of the temples of Sicily. Its Péristyle of 6 X 15 columns however is lengthened more as usually, which made it possible to spare at the ends a space equal to the width of two columns, as well in front of the Pronaos as behind of the Opisthodome. Miss also the Adyton , usual in the temples of Sicily.
The elements of architrave show bleedings of U-shaped handling, intended to pass from the symmetrical loops of unloading. Remains of the temple of Héraclès were found disseminated on all the zone, for example of the capitals covered with Stuc, as owed the being much of other elements of the temple. The eight visible columns of the southern part were re-installed in 1924, while the whole on the northern side was it as of the XIXe century.
