Valley of Tarentaise
The Tarentaise is one of the province S of the Savoy.
It corresponds to the high valley of the Isere, of its source to the doors of Albertville, like with the tributary perpendicular valleys. The principal valley is a glaciated valley, boxed and very narrow at certain places, broadside in north by the solid masses of the Beaufortain and the Mont Blanc, and with the south by the Vanoise.
The name of the province of Tarentaise comes from the old Latin name of its political center, Moûtiers, Darentasia , seat of a évêché since the 5th century. The use of the name for the province would go back to the 11th century.
The Gentilé of Tarentaise is Tarin (female Tarine ).
History

The principal function of Tarentaise during all Middle Ages was that of passage between the Italian peninsula and the North of Europe, in particular for the pilgrimage between Vienna and Milan. This site makes of it a territory geostrategic for the States of Savoy.In the Antiquity, Tarentaise was inhabited by the Ceutrons (cf the locality " centron" on the commune of Montgirod), before being occupied by the Allobroges. At the time of the Roman conquest, the Romains establish the province of the the Alps Grées , with Aime, Latin Axima in , for capital.
427 (?), Saint Jacques d' Assyrie is the first bishop of Tarentaise. Its Marcel successor builds the cathedral of the city.
Starting from IXe century, the diocese of Moûtiers then attached to Vienna becomes the seat of an ecclesiastical province in the year 800 whose archbishop has jurisdiction on évèques Aoste and of Sion.
In year 996, the archbishop of Moûtiers takes the title of count.
Geography
Tarentaise is a high alpine valley where Isere runs, passing by several thresholds, until the Combe of Savoy beginner to Albertville. The distance between Moûtiers and Borough-Saint-Maurice is of 25 kilometers.

Administration of the territory
Administratively, Tarentaise corresponds to the major part of the Arrondissement of Albertville. Previously, it formed the totality of the district of Moûtiers, removed by the law of the September 10th 1926.
Economy
Tarentaise concentrates on its territory one of the strongest world densities of winter sports resorts, of which: Courchevel, Méribel and Valley Thorens forming the the Three Valleys, Plagne, the Arcs formant Paradise ski, Tignes and Valley of Isere forming the Space Killy.
Among the other activities, one will be able to quote, in addition to agriculture (mainly dairy bovine breeding), heavy industry, the hydroelectricity, like three thermal spas.
