Valley of Orcia

The Val of Orcia is a vast valley located in the Province of His, in Toscane, in the North-East with Amiata mount and close to the Latium, crossed by the Orcia river which gives him its name. Its landscape emblematic of Tuscany, marked clay and tuff (hills argilo-sand spreaders of the Pliocène), is visible everywhere on the postcards, the photographs like those of its medieval villages like Pienza and Montalcino.

Geography and history

The Valley of Orcia is classified since July 2nd, 2004 like an important park natural, artistic and cultural , belonging to the Patrimoine of Humanity by UNESCO, for the state of conservation of its landscapes, which had a considerable influence on many artists of the artistic Renaissance Italian.

It is described as: Exceptional example of natural landscape redrawn during the time Rebirth to respect the ideals of good government and to create a typical image of engraving; the landscape of the Valley of Orcia was celebrated by the painters of the Sienan École, born during the Rebirth… The images of the Valley of Orcia and particularly the reproductions of its landscapes, in which one represents people who live in harmony with nature, became the icons of the rebirth and deeply influenced the mode to think the landscape in the years which have suivis.

Its communes are Castiglione d' Orcia, Montalcino, Pienza, Radicofani and San Quirico d' Orcia. The other important centers are Monticchiello, Bagno Vignoni, Montenero d' Orcia and Montegiovi.

In addition to its cypresses, it is famous for its typical drinks, its Pecorino di Pienza and its wine Brunello di Montalcino.
