History

Foot-note: The " term; Val" does not correspond to " Vallée" but an administrative unit of Sicily at the time arabo-Norman indicates here.

These cities, almost entirely rebuilt after the earthquake of the Valley di Noto of 1693 are perfect testimonys of the architecture of the late baroque in Sicily.

UNESCO

The inscription with the inheritance of humanity goes back to 2002. According to UNESCO, the four criteria are:
  1. This group of cities of the south-east of Sicily offers an exceptional testimony of the exuberant genius of art and architecture of the late baroque.
  2. the cities of the valley of Noto represent the apogee and the final blooming of the Baroque art in Europe.
  3. the exceptional quality of the art and the architecture of the late baroque of the valley of Noto resides in its geographical and chronological homogeneity, like in its expansion, the result of the earthquake of 1693 in this area.
  4. the eight cities of the south-east of Sicily which constitute this proposal for an inscription are characteristic of the models of urban creation of this area and are placed under the constant threat of the risks of earthquakes and the eruptions of Etna.
