Valleraugue

Valleraugue is a common French, located in the department of the Gard and the area Languedoc-Roussillon.

Geography

Valleraugue is a commune of the the Cevennes gardoises on the Herault. It is on the territory of the commune that the observatory of the Mont Aigoual is established, second solid mass of the Cevennes and culminating point of the Gard.

  • At the beginning of the 13th century, Valleraugue belonged to the Maison of Roquefeuil; it formed then part of the baronnie of Meyrueis, and was definitively joined together with the crown only towards 1780.

  • Valleraugue became, in 1790, the place chief of a canton district of Vigan which included/understood only three communes: Rouvière, Saint-Andre-with-Majencoules and Valleraugue.
