Valledupar
Valledupar is a city and a municipality in the North-East of the Colombia; it is the capital of the Département of Cesar and was founded in 1550 by the Spanish conqueror Hernando De Santana. Its name Valle de Upar (valley of Upar) was established in the honor of cacic an Amerindian, Cacique Upar, which controlled the valley. It is located between the mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and Serrania del Perija at the margin of the Guatapurà river and the Cesar river.
Valledupar is an agricultural center and agroindustriel and a center of breeding of important cattle for the area between the departments of Cesar and the municipalities of Guajira, in the past called Provincia de Padilla . Valledupar is especially known to be the cradle of the music Vallenato, which is representative of the Colombian culture, and to have one of the prisons with the maximum safety most modern of Colombia.
These last years, the city was very affected by the Colombian Civil war, having known massive kidnappings, forced deportations an endemic problem of impunity reflected especially by crimes against the Journaliste S.
