Recent archaeological discoveries showed that the site of Encourdoules had become the center of a Pagus of the name of Cantabensis . All traces of occupation seems to disappear beyond the 3rd century without one noting index of violent destruction. The abandonment is certainly related to redéploiment economic activities in the area. The village which sheltered many basins of pressing intended for the manufacture of the wine or oil is " abandonné" towards the end of IIe S, at the moment when are founded large farm wine or olive-growing in the area, COM the candéou with Peymeinade, the crossroads of the Caps with Biot.
Birth of Vallauris
Vallis Aurea appears in the texts at the 10th century like part of the Episcopate of Antibes, before passing to the 11th century under the domination of the Abbots of Lérins, by a succession of donations, whose most important of the December 9th 1038 is that. But epidemics and bands of plunderers decimate the dispersed population. The April 20th 1501, Dom Raynier Lascaris, prior of Lérins and lord of Vallauris, gives in perpetual Emphytéose the whole of the territory to families originating in her County of Vintimille, like with “other men wanting to live to that the place of Vallauris”. It imposes a plan for the rebuilding of the village. It is the origin of the “Castrum” called “old city today”. In this act of dwelling, it is already mentioned the Poterie of Vallauris, as well as glassmaking: “… Seigneur Prior says it… reserved the lesde or gabelle… of all the vases of ground and glass… which will be put on sale at the known as soil of Vallauris”.With the passing of years, a municipal life is organized and evolved/moved, until in 1787 date of the Sécularisation of the Monastère of Lérins. Some examples of the evolution of demography: in 1540, there were 98 houses; in 1608, 200 houses; in 1698, 300 houses inhabited for 367 household heads; in 1765, 293 inhabited houses and 1309 inhabitants.
March 1st 1815, Napoleon unloads in Vallauris, in the Gulf-Juan, with its return of the Isle of Elba.
It is especially at the end of the 19th century, that important work of town planning was carried out. It is the passage of the lifestyle of the Moyen-âge at modern times: the installation of the Tram in 1899, the construction of the school of boys the same year, and of the school of girls in 1908. Electricity arrives in 1919. The War memorial goes back to 1923, and is due to the chisel of Delfoly.
The arrival of the water of the Channel of Siagne, about 1900, allowed the development of agriculture, and in particular of the culture of the orange tree with flower, the Bigaradier. Today, Vallauris is the only town of France where this tree is still cultivated to collect its flower and to distill it.
The industrial culinary pottery always was during the centuries, with the work of the ground, the main activity of the city. But, at the beginning of the 20th century, it becomes artistic and ceramic pottery, with the family Massier.
The expansion of the hamlet of Gulf-Juan is related on the creation of the Tourisme, and especially to the arrival of the railroad, in second half of the 19th century. Famous personalities were made build villas with hillside.
After the Second world war, it one period ago very ostentation where considered artists, attracted by the reputation of Vallauris, settled there, of which Pablo Picasso. Picasso made gift at the city of the Homme to the sheep in 1950, and 1955, of the fresco the War and Peace installed in a room of the castle become National museum.
