Valjevo , in Serb Cyrillic Ваљевo, is a city and a municipality of Serbia located at 100  km in the South-west of Belgrade, with the confluence of the rivers Jablanica and Obnica, which meets to give rise to the river Kolubara. They belong to the district of Kolubara whose town of Valjevo is the administrative center. In 2002, the city counted: 61035 inhabitants and the municipality of which it is the center: 96761.

It is extremely probable which the name of the city comes from the proper name " Valj". This name declined with the genitive into Serb is the Slavic form of many Latin names: Valko, Valli, Valius and Valentinus.

Geography

The river Kolubara divides the city into two.

To north, the city extends largely on the valley, whereas the southern part is tightened between the river and the mountains.

History

On the site of Valjevo, the archeologists found vestiges of dwellings going back to the beginning of the Stone Age.

During the history of the peninsula of the Balkans, the valley of Valjevo successively found inside the borders of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and, as from the 12th century, of the State all lately founded by the dynasty of the Nemanjić.

In the surroundings of the city, the medieval monasteries of Ćelije are, of Pustinja and that, more recent, of Lelić.

The village of Brankovina, located in the Valjevo municipality, is an arts center and tourist famous. It is the cradle of the Nenadović family, to which belong the priest Mateja Nenadović and his/her brother, the voïvode Jakov, which were both chiefs of the Council which managed Serbia during the First revolt Serb against the Turks. The poetess Desanka Maksimović passed its childhood there.
